Lionel Messi History Lionel Messi is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time. He was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. Messi began playing soccer at a young age and joined the youth team of his local club, Newell's Old Boys. However, when he was 13 years old, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, which meant that his body did not produce enough of the hormone that stimulates growth. His family could not afford the expensive treatment, so Messi's father, Jorge, contacted FC Barcelona to see if they would be willing to sign his son. Barcelona agreed to pay for Messi's treatment and he moved to Spain with his family. Messi joined Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia, and quickly rose through the ranks.
